In “Meantimers”, I look at the complex theme of long-term unemployment and focus on it’s devastating impact on the mental, social and physical health of individuals. I create images with a group of diverse, unemployed New Yorkers, victims of the recession. Through portraiture, role-play and conceptual staging of my subjects’ personal experiences I turn my subjects into active protagonists in a narrative that explores the challenging conditions of the unemployed today.
My hope is to give my subjects a voice and new insights into their individual journeys. I want to bring awareness to the fact that prolonged unemployment is not a temporary financial or self-inflicted problem. It is one of the biggest social issues in America today and as recent studies on the subject show, it is a problem that will not easily fade away with a growing economy.
